Despite of scientific advancement, our current scientific TOE (Theory of Everything) is a dead incomplete theory because it only accounts for dead things, and it totally ignores the role of life and consciousness. In the East, however, the life force i.e. Qi (or prana) has been known for thousands of years. During the past decade, many scientific experiments had been performed in order to validate its existence and determine Qi's effects. The existence of Qi and some of its properties has now been rigorously confirmed by scientists in collaboration with famous Qigong
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qigong ) master Dr. Yan Xin (http://www.yanxinqigong.net/aboutdryan/index.htm)
in their published Qi research papers (e.g. http://www.accessv.com/~yuan/yansci/time/2002_YanXin_Qigong_JSE.pdf ). However, their profound Qi research findings are largely ignored by current mainstream scientists, skeptics, and CSICOP (Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal).
To formulate a true TOE, the Life Force and Consciousness must be incorporated into any form of future Theory of Everything. Dr. Yan Xin's Qi research experiements have definitely provided us a glimpse of this true live TOE of the future.

Although I'm sympathetic to various concepts like Qi, I've never seen anything that strongly suggests that (A) it's something that mainstream science is willfully overlooking scientific evidence of, or that (B) it's something clearly wrongfully being left out of TOE theories. TOE theories don't generally address things like Qi, but they don't deny it, either. There doesn't seem to be anything that shows that Qi is needed for a TOE, and so it lies outside the concerns of physicists working in that field.
(The name "Theory Of Everything" is not really an accurate description but rather jargon. Scientists who work in related fields know what's meant by "TOE", but the phrase doesn't mean what other folks are likely to suspect. Even in theory, it wouldn't be possible to derive everything and anything else from a TOE, because the universe is known to contain intrinsically unpredictable phenomena, complexity, etc.)
It's not impossible that this picture will change -- and, for my money, CSICOP's dry skepticism is generally non-scientific and usually a waste of time -- but I don't see any signs that Qi will be or needs to be accepted by mainstream science.
Someday Qi will be understood. It'll be recategorized and redefined thru chemistry, physics, biology, and psychology.
That's a bit much to do in the allowed time.
By 2040, we'll better understand Chinese medicine. We'll have more insight into its workings on diseases like Cancer. The study of Yoga may continue. We may begin to accept the effects of meditation and mental state onmood, memory, and physical state.
By 2040, maybe we'll acknowledge the body is more complex than we though before. But will Qi be accepted? Hm. For that to happen, I think western medicine might need to have very good insight into what's behind Qi, to describe it in a new language, and then to say this is what Qi is.
I have been thinking about brain Cancer for sometime. A former girlfriend has brain cancer. According to her and her Chinese doctor, the medicinal prescription is easy, curing her mind is the hard (and necessary) part. Becoming happy. Letting the effects of unease disappear. Chinese cancer treatment is studied by the west. We know green tea can reverse something. Does Kelp and pokeroot dissolve tumors like they say?
You could say Chinese medicine reactivates natural defenses and processes. Western medicine is just starting to think that way now.
We're starting to figure out Alzheimer's. When will we say it's psychological? When will we say brain plaque is our way of burning our neurons. Bad mood kills the brain.
I think we'll cure Alzheimer's before this prediction is met. Both require a very new understanding of the brain. It might be the key to Qi.
The work of Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama and his apparatus for measuring electrical current present in the body, labeled AMI, are already adding tremendous scientific credibility to a field that has heretofore been viewed as a pseudo-science by those inclined toward scientific materialism. The existance and manipulation of qi energy in TEAM calls for continued revision in practical scientific and medical endeavors, where the prevalent opinion, decades after Niels Bohr, remains the denial of intrinsic mind-body relationships. We are moving toward another paradigm shift, from a more mature science whose practitioners are threatened by neither the importance of subjective experience nor the understanding that the complexity of the human animal far surpasses a mere mechanical understanding of his physiology, psychology, and biology.
This change in science would be great. How far we'll get this millenium, I'm not sure. We have some terrific biologists like Lewontin and Gould. What's important about them is not necessarily their thoughts but their spirit. Few scientists conduct science with an awareness of where they are in history.
People have believed that science would move toward their religious/magical beliefs ever since science arose. People have been dressing up spiritualist notions in the words of science for a century and a half, and of course woo believers are particularly fond of appropriating theories where a shallow understanding is enough to create a sense of mystery (quantum physics, TOE, relativity, etc.). E.g. if qi were genuinely known to be "energy" -- i.e. the ability to do work -- then its effects could easily be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the most skeptical scientist.
It's a testament to science (the real kind, not the imaginary kind alluded to in this wager) that even the least rigorous and most creatively illusionary thinkers seem to feel the need to dress their faith in scientific clothing.
Why is it that TCM is held in such high esteem when compared with the equally primitive medicinal traditions of the noble Native American or African peoples? Americans are so quick to latch onto anything associated with something fashionable [and Chinese history is truly fabulous,] regardless of how ridiculous it is.
